Details:
David Brooks autographed partially printed legal document dated January 16, 1802, formally admitting and licensing James Tallmadge Jr. to practice law before the Courts of Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace for Dutchess County, New York. Issued by Brooks as First Judge of the Dutchess County Court of Common Pleas, the document states that Tallmadge had been regularly admitted as an attorney and counselor at law and authorizes him to appear and practice before the courts according to the laws of the State of New York. Brooks has signed "D. Brooks" at the lower right, with a large red wax seal affixed at the upper left.
The verso contains an additional manuscript certification dated January 14, 1802, recording that Tallmadge personally appeared in open court and took the prescribed oaths of abjuration and allegiance to New York, the oath of office as an attorney and counselor, and an oath to support the Constitution of the United States. The certification is autographed by Revolutionary War veteran and Dutchess County Clerk Robert H. Livingston.
The document measures approximately 9.75 x 6". Very good condition with expected age toning, original folds, scattered staining and handling wear, minor edge wear, and cracking to the original red wax seal.
