Details:

Earl Warren autographed typed letter (TLS), dated July 12, 1948, on his personal gubernatorial stationery featuring the California state seal and the heading "Earl Warren, Sacramento, California." Addressed to Dr. Robert A. Peers of Colfax, California, and signed "Earl Warren" in black ink above his typed designation as Governor.

Written just weeks after Warren received the Republican nomination for Vice President of the United States, the letter thanks Peers for his congratulations and enthusiastic support of the Republican presidential ticket of Thomas E. Dewey and Earl Warren.

Warren writes, in part:

"Thank you very much for your congratulatory letter of June 27th. Nina also enjoyed reading it."

He continues:

"Your confidence in the ticket is sincerely appreciated. We will do the best we can."

Warren further expresses his gratitude for Peers' longstanding support:

"It is deeply gratifying to look back on the unfailing support you have given me in all my ventures. I am glad to know you are enthusiastic about this one."

The letter concludes with personal wishes from Warren and his wife, Nina.

An interesting piece of political correspondence dating from Warren's 1948 vice presidential campaign. Warren was nominated as Thomas E. Dewey's running mate at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in June 1948. Although widely favored to win, the Dewey-Warren ticket was defeated by incumbent President Harry S. Truman in one of the most famous electoral upsets in American history.

Fine condition with light age toning and minor handling wear.

Earl Warren (1891–1974) served as Governor of California from 1943 to 1953 and was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 1948. Appointed Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953, he presided over the landmark Brown v. Board of Education (1954) decision and later chaired the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
