Details:
Samuel Cochran autographed partial manuscript land document dated June 5, 1823, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The surviving portion identifies the document as an extract relating to James Cunningham's "Depreciation Land in District No. 4," taken from records remaining in the Surveyor General's Office. Cochran certifies the extract, noting that the seal of the office has been affixed, and signs prominently "Samuel Cochran" at the conclusion.
The document measures approximately 5.5 x 6.75". Very good condition with overall age toning, original vertical fold, scattered staining and ink transfer, minor edge wear, and an irregular upper edge where removed from a larger document.
Samuel Cochran (1750–1837) was a Pennsylvania farmer and Revolutionary War veteran. Born in Chester County and raised in Cumberland County, he enlisted on February 12, 1776, in a company of the 6th Pennsylvania Battalion and fought at the Battle of Three Rivers in Canada, where his brother James was killed. Cochran reenlisted the following year with the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment under General Anthony Wayne and fought at Paoli, Brandywine, and Germantown before enduring the winter of 1777–78 with Washington's army at Valley Forge. After the war he settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he became a successful farmer and active member of his community, participating in local politics, supporting the Presbyterian Church, and donating land for the area's first school.
