Details:
Samuel F. Cary autographed handwritten note (ANS), penned at the bottom of a letter addressed to him by Seymour Morris of Chicago, dated January 16, 1892. The original Morris letter, written from Chicago and dated January 6, 1892, requests assistance in obtaining a suitable photograph of Cary for Morris’s collection of prominent Americans.
Morris writes in part: “I have a large collection of cabinet size photographs of prominent men and have tried for some time to get one of you. Will you kindly inform me where I can purchase the best photo of yourself.”
At the conclusion of the letter, Cary responds in his own hand:
“Jan 16th/92. I sent you by this mail a photo of myself. As good a one as I have. Yours, S. F. Cary.”
An attractive and personal exchange documenting a request for a photographic likeness of one of America’s most prominent nineteenth-century temperance advocates, accompanied by Cary’s signed response confirming that he had mailed a photograph directly to the requester.
Fine condition.
Samuel Fenton Cary (1814-1900) was an American politician, lecturer, author, and leading advocate of the temperance movement. A native of Ohio, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1855 to 1859 and later gained national prominence as one of the country’s most influential prohibitionist speakers. Through extensive lecture tours and published writings, Cary became a leading voice in the effort to curb alcohol consumption and promote social reform during the nineteenth century. His work helped shape the broader temperance movement that would eventually culminate in national Prohibition decades after his death.
