Nathaniel Prentice Banks (1816–1894) was an American politician and Union Army major general during the Civil War. A prominent Massachusetts Republican, he served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1856 to 1857 and Governor of Massachusetts from 1858 to 1861.
During the Civil War, Banks commanded Union forces in Louisiana and the Gulf Department, participating in operations along the Mississippi River and leading the controversial Red River Campaign of 1864. Although his military record was mixed, he remained an influential political general and supporter of the Union cause.
Following the war, Banks returned to Congress, where he continued his lengthy political career representing Massachusetts.
