Details:
Gerald R. Ford and John Paul Stevens dual-autographed postal card, featuring the original signatures of the 38th President of the United States and the Supreme Court Justice he appointed to the nation's highest court.
The signatures appear together on the blank side of a trimmed United States postal card, with Gerald R. Ford signing in black ink and John Paul Stevens signing beneath in blue ink.
An interesting presidential and Supreme Court autograph combination, particularly significant because President Gerald Ford personally nominated Stevens to the United States Supreme Court in November 1975.
Following the retirement of Associate Justice William O. Douglas, President Ford nominated Stevens to fill the vacancy. Stevens was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 17, 1975, by a vote of 98–0, and took his seat two days later.
Stevens would go on to serve on the Supreme Court for more than 34 years, becoming one of the longest-serving justices in American history. His tenure extended well beyond Ford's presidency, spanning the administrations of seven presidents before his retirement in 2010.
The reverse features a 1982 United States 14-cent Charles Carroll postal stationery imprint, together with a handwritten address bearing corrections and crossed-out portions.
The card measures approximately 5.5 x 3 inches. Fine condition with light age toning, minor handling wear, and trimmed edges.
Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. (1913–2006) was the 38th President of the United States, serving from 1974 to 1977. Previously Vice President under Richard Nixon, Ford assumed the presidency following Nixon's resignation during the Watergate scandal. He remains the only individual to serve as both Vice President and President without being elected to either office. Before entering the executive branch, Ford represented Michigan in the United States House of Representatives for nearly 25 years.
John Paul Stevens (1920–2019) was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1975 to 2010. Appointed by President Ford, Stevens became an influential figure in American constitutional law, particularly in matters involving civil liberties, criminal justice, and individual rights. At the time of his retirement, he was the third-longest-serving justice in Supreme Court history.
