W.H. Gilbert autographed card signed in dark ink, measuring approximately 3.5 x 1.5 inches. Gilbert was a Civil War veteran and later a member of the Lincoln Guard of Honor, the distinguished organization formed to preserve the memory of President Abraham Lincoln and assist in ceremonies associated with Lincoln's Tomb in Springfield, Illinois.

Gilbert enlisted at the age of twenty in York, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg the following day as a private with Company B, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry. During the Siege of Petersburg in June 1864, he was wounded in the left hand but recovered and returned to active duty, serving until his honorable discharge on August 3, 1865. Following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Gilbert served as a member of the slain president's honor guard in Washington. Late in life, he also visited the White House, where he met President Franklin D. Roosevelt, giving him the rare distinction of having personal connections with two American presidents.

He enlisted in Company B, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry in January 1864, was wounded during the Siege of Petersburg, and returned to duty before receiving an honorable discharge in 1865. Gilbert later served as a member of Abraham Lincoln's honor guard in Washington and became a member of the Lincoln Guard of Honor, helping preserve the legacy of the sixteenth president. Late in life he visited the White House and met President Franklin D. Roosevelt, giving him the rare distinction of having personal connections with two American presidents. Although he survived the Civil War, he was killed in an automobile accident after crashing his car into a tree.
