Details:
Jonathan Trumbull autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated March 5, 1783, issued as Governor of Connecticut from Lebanon and addressed to the Committee of Pay-Table at Hartford. Trumbull directs the committee to examine the account of Charles Fanning, Pay Master of the 1st Connecticut Regiment, and to determine three months' pay for January, February, and March 1781 for Captain Hewit's company of light infantry and for the old Eighth Regiment. He further directs the Treasurer to pay Fanning whatever amount is found due. Trumbull boldly signs "Jonth. Trumbull" at the conclusion with an elaborate flourish.
The letter measures approximately 7.25 x 5.5". Fine condition.
Jonathan Trumbull (1710-1785) was a merchant, statesman, and one of the most important civilian leaders of the American Revolution. Governor of Connecticut throughout the Revolutionary War, Trumbull was the only colonial governor to support the Patriot cause at the outbreak of hostilities and remain in office after independence was declared. A close friend and trusted ally of George Washington, he played a critical role in supplying the Continental Army with troops, food, clothing, arms, and other necessities, earning Connecticut the nickname "The Provisions State." Washington relied heavily upon Trumbull's support and counsel throughout the conflict. Trumbull served as governor until 1784, making this 1783 military pay letter an especially desirable document from the closing months of the Revolutionary War.
