Stanley Forman Reed (1884–1980) was an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1938 to 1957. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Reed served during a transformative period in American constitutional history, participating in landmark decisions involving civil rights, federal authority, and the constitutionality of New Deal legislation.
Reed was among the nine justices who unanimously decided Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the historic Supreme Court ruling that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Although initially reluctant to overturn established segregation precedents, Reed ultimately joined Chief Justice Earl Warren and the other justices in the unanimous decision.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Reed served as Solicitor General of the United States from 1935 to 1938, defending major New Deal programs before the Court. He was also notable for being the last Supreme Court justice appointed without having earned a formal law degree.
