William Heath (1737-1814) was an American farmer, statesman, and Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. A Massachusetts patriot active in the colonial militia before the Revolution, Heath was commissioned a Major General in the Continental Army in 1776 and served under George Washington throughout the war. He participated in the Siege of Boston and later held important commands in New York and the Hudson Highlands, where American forces guarded the strategically vital Hudson River corridor. Heath was entrusted with the custody of British and German prisoners captured following the American victory at Saratoga and remained in Continental service through the end of the Revolution. After the war, he returned to public life in Massachusetts, serving in the state senate, as a probate judge, and as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. His extensive military service and close association with Washington place him among the prominent senior officers of the Continental Army.
