The reverse bears handwritten endorsements and several period banking cancellation stamps, including markings from the Commercial National Bank of Canton, Ohio.
Dating to 1890, the check was executed during Day's career as a prominent Ohio attorney, several years before his appointment as United States Secretary of State under President William McKinley and his subsequent service on the United States Supreme Court.
An interesting early financial document from a future Supreme Court Justice who played an important role in American diplomacy during the Spanish-American War and the negotiation of the Treaty of Paris in 1898.
The check measures approximately 6.5 x 2.5 inches. Very good condition with light age toning, original bank cancellation stamps, and handling wear. The upper edge exhibits the original perforated separation from the checkbook. Day's signature remains clearly legible.
