Details:
Winfield Scott Schley autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated January 24, 1910, from Washington, D.C. Penned entirely in Schley's hand, the letter concerns a portrait of General Winfield Scott, the celebrated American military commander for whom Schley was named.
Schley requests permission to borrow a picture of General Scott for reproduction in an article he was preparing, writing, "Would you mind lending me for a few days the picture of Gen'l Scott to have it photographed for me in an article I am preparing in which I refer to him as being my sponsor at baptism!"
The letter is signed "W. S. Schley" at the conclusion. An interesting personal association between two prominent figures in American military history, with Schley directly referencing his namesake and the general's role as his baptismal sponsor.
The letter measures approximately 4.5 x 7 inches. Fine condition with light age toning and handling wear.
Winfield Scott Schley (1839–1911) was an American naval officer who served during the Civil War and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. During the Civil War, he participated in Union naval operations, including engagements associated with the capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana. He later gained national recognition for commanding the successful 1884 Arctic expedition that rescued members of Adolphus Greely's ill-fated exploration party. Schley achieved his greatest fame during the Spanish-American War, commanding the American Flying Squadron at the decisive Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, which resulted in the destruction of the Spanish fleet. His role in the victory made him a celebrated naval hero, although a subsequent controversy arose over the division of credit between Schley and Admiral William T. Sampson.
