Details:
Abe Fortas autographed First Day Cover (FDC) featuring President Lyndon B. Johnson and his Great Society initiative. The cover bears an illustrated portrait of Johnson alongside the presidential seal and the inscription "The Great Society."
Affixed at the upper right is a pair of 3-cent National Capital Sesquicentennial commemorative postage stamps, depicting the United States Supreme Court building and honoring the establishment of the federal government in Washington, D.C., in 1800. The stamps bear a Washington, D.C., cancellation from 1950.
Fortas has personally signed "Abe Fortas" in blue ink beneath the presidential seal.
An interesting association piece connecting Fortas with President Lyndon B. Johnson, whose close personal and political relationship with the future Supreme Court Justice played an important role in Fortas's career. A longtime friend and trusted adviser to Johnson, Fortas was appointed to the Supreme Court by the president in 1965. Johnson subsequently nominated him to become Chief Justice in 1968, although the nomination was ultimately withdrawn.
The Great Society was Johnson's ambitious domestic policy program, encompassing major initiatives in civil rights, education, healthcare, and the reduction of poverty.
Fine condition.
