Nicholas Fish (1758-1833) was an American Revolutionary War officer, prominent New York public official, and close associate of Alexander Hamilton. Fish served in the Continental Army throughout much of the Revolution, rising to the rank of major and serving with distinction in several important campaigns. He participated in the Battles of Saratoga and later served at Yorktown, where he commanded troops during the decisive 1781 campaign that resulted in the British surrender. Fish was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and maintained a lifelong friendship with fellow Revolutionary War veteran Alexander Hamilton. After the war, he became an influential figure in New York civic and political life, serving as New York's Adjutant General and holding federal office as Supervisor of the Revenue for the District of New York, the capacity in which this 1800 letter was issued. Fish was also the father of Hamilton Fish, who later became Governor of New York, United States Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State.
