Details:
Charles Biddle autographed partial document, also autographed by noted Pennsylvania Surveyor General John Lukens. The surviving section appears to originate from a Pennsylvania land survey document and bears Biddle's large, elaborate autograph alongside the manuscript notation "Signed Charles Biddle V.P." Lukens has autographed above in his capacity as Surveyor General.
The document fragment measures approximately 8.5 x 3.25". Fine condition with expected age toning, irregular edges from removal from the larger document, and light handling wear.
Charles Biddle (1745–1821) was a Revolutionary War naval officer, Pennsylvania statesman, and merchant. During the American Revolution, he served as a captain in the Pennsylvania State Navy and participated in the defense of the Delaware River and Philadelphia region. Following the war, Biddle entered public life and served as Vice President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council from 1785 to 1787, effectively the state's second-highest executive office under Pennsylvania's 1776 constitution. He was a member of the prominent Biddle family and the brother of Revolutionary War naval officer Nicholas Biddle.
John Lukens (1720–1789) was a prominent colonial and early American surveyor who served as Surveyor General of Pennsylvania. His long career placed him at the center of Pennsylvania's surveying and land administration during the colonial, Revolutionary, and early national periods, and his name appears on numerous important early Pennsylvania land records.
