Opie Read autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated October 19, 1899, on official Press Club of Chicago stationery. Written entirely in Read's hand, the letter discusses the relationship between journalism and literature and the importance of literary expression in newspapers.
Read observes that there is no longer any clear division between the literature of the press and literature more generally, writing, "The present is always under suspicion; the past is aglow with endearments." He further expresses his belief that the English language cannot afford to exclude the literature of the future, emphasizing the importance of encouraging talented writers and improving the literary quality of newspapers.
