Details:
Richard Nixon autographed typed letter (TLS), one page, approximately 6.75 x 8.875", on White House stationery, dated August 7, 1969, and addressed to U.S. Senator Howard H. Baker Jr. Nixon has signed at the conclusion with his customary presidential "RN" signature.
Nixon thanks Baker for his vote on the Safeguard System the previous day, writing that despite "enormous pressures built up in the news media and other quarters against the program," it took "great political courage and statesmanship to stand up and be counted as you did." He adds that Baker had made "a very major contribution to our security and our efforts toward enduring peace."
The letter relates to the closely contested Senate battle over the Safeguard anti-ballistic missile system. On August 6, 1969, the Senate defeated amendments that would have blocked deployment funding, clearing a major hurdle for the Nixon administration's defense program.
Fine condition.
