Details:
David Leonard Barnes autographed manuscript document, consisting of a clipped portion of an early 19th-century legal instrument, approximately 6 x 2.5 inches. The document features Barnes' handwritten signature, "David Leonard Barnes," followed by his official designation as "District Judge Rho. Isl. District."
The surviving manuscript reads, in part:
"In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal."
An interesting early federal judicial autograph from a judge appointed by President Thomas Jefferson. Barnes served on the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island from 1801 until his death in 1812.
Of particular historical significance, Barnes was directly involved in West v. Barnes (1791), recognized as the first case decided by the United States Supreme Court. Representing himself and his wife's family, Barnes prevailed in the case, which concerned the procedural requirements for seeking Supreme Court review of a lower federal court judgment.
The document measures approximately 6 x 2.5 inches. Very good condition with age toning, scattered staining, minor edge wear, and irregular trimming from a larger document.
David Leonard Barnes (1760–1812) was an American attorney and federal judge. A graduate of Harvard College, he practiced law in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and served as United States Attorney for Rhode Island before his appointment to the federal bench by President Thomas Jefferson in 1801. He remained a United States District Judge until his death in 1812.
