Details:
Robert F. Kennedy autographed typed letter (TLS) on official United States Senate letterhead, dated May 9, 1968, measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches. Addressed to campaign supporter Jerry Egan of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kennedy expresses his appreciation for Egan's efforts on behalf of his presidential campaign in Nebraska during the 1968 Democratic primary season. He writes, in part, "I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all that you are doing for me in Nebraska." He continues by noting the "warm and enthusiastic receptions" the campaign had received and credits Egan's hard work with contributing greatly to that success before closing, "Again, my thanks and best wishes."
Written less than one month before Robert F. Kennedy's assassination on June 5, 1968, the letter dates to one of the most significant periods of his presidential campaign. Nebraska held its Democratic presidential primary on May 14, 1968, just five days after this letter was written, making it a timely expression of gratitude to a campaign volunteer during a pivotal stage of the election.
Very good condition overall with expected mailing folds, light age toning, and minor handling wear.
Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) served as U.S. Attorney General from 1961 to 1964 and as United States Senator from New York from 1965 until his death. A central figure in American politics during the 1960s, he championed civil rights, social justice, organized labor, and anti-poverty initiatives. In 1968, he launched a campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, winning several key primaries before he was assassinated in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, shortly after his victory in the California primary.
