Details:
Edward T. Sanford autographed official United States Supreme Court card, dated February 8, 1924, featuring the engraved letterhead "Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D.C."
Sanford has personally signed "Edward T. Sanford" in black ink across the center of the card, adding his title, "Associate Justice," beneath his signature, followed by the handwritten date "February 8th, 1924."
An attractive Supreme Court autograph dating from Sanford's early tenure on the nation's highest court, just one year after his appointment by President Warren G. Harding in 1923.
Sanford served during the Taft Court and participated in several important constitutional decisions of the 1920s. He is particularly remembered for authoring the majority opinion in Gitlow v. New York (1925), a landmark First Amendment case in which the Court assumed that freedom of speech and freedom of the press were protected against state infringement through the Fourteenth Amendment.
Sanford's relatively brief tenure on the Supreme Court, lasting only seven years before his death in 1930, makes his official court autographs particularly desirable to collectors of Supreme Court history.
The card measures approximately 4.25 x 3.25 inches. Fine condition.
