Collection of twelve mid-19th century political pamphlets and printed speeches relating to the national debate over slavery, sectional politics, the Kansas-Nebraska crisis, and the emerging Republican movement. Published primarily during the 1850s, the group includes speeches and addresses by prominent political figures such as Edward Wade of Ohio, Russell Sage of New York, Henry Bennett of New York, John A. Bingham of Ohio, John M. Read of Pennsylvania, Mason W. Tappan of New Hampshire, and David Dudley Field, together with The North and the South reprinted from the New York Tribune, Slavery and Its Tendencies, and the proceedings of the 1856 Democratic Republican State Convention. The pamphlets reflect many of the major political arguments surrounding slavery, territorial expansion, Free Soil principles, and sectional conflict during the years immediately preceding the American Civil War.
