Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) was an American Revolutionary War Major General, statesman, and public official from Massachusetts. He commanded American forces in the Southern Department and was forced to surrender Charleston to the British in 1780. After his exchange, Lincoln returned to service and played a prominent role at Yorktown, where Washington selected him to receive the sword of British General Charles O'Hara during the surrender ceremony in 1781. He later served as the first United States Secretary at War under the Articles of Confederation and, from 1789 until shortly before his death, as Collector of the Port of Boston.
