Details:
Fletcher Webster autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated February 13, 1855, from Boston and addressed to C. Edward Lester, Esq. Written across two pages of a single folded sheet, the letter concerns a book Lester had previously mentioned to Webster.
Webster writes that "two or three days after the receipt of your previous kind note, the book came to hand," adding that he hopes he may obtain additional copies if Lester regards it favorably. He continues, "I think it must have a powerful effect on the public mind. I am very much obliged to you for your remembrance of my Father's Son."
The letter is signed "Fletcher Webster" at the conclusion. An interesting association letter in which Webster directly references the legacy and reputation of his celebrated father, Daniel Webster.
The folded sheet measures approximately 5 x 8 inches. Very good condition with expected age toning, original folds, old mounting residue to the verso, and a minor tear along the lower left edge.
Fletcher Webster (1813–1862) was an American attorney, diplomat, and military officer, and the son of celebrated statesman Daniel Webster. He served as secretary to his father during Daniel Webster's tenure as U.S. Secretary of State and later as Surveyor of the Port of Boston. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Webster organized the 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, popularly known as the "Webster Regiment," and served as its colonel. He was mortally wounded while leading his regiment at the Second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862, dying the following day.
