Details:
Abe Fortas autographed typed letter (TLS), dated June 4, 1952, on official letterhead of Arnold, Fortas & Porter, the prominent Washington, D.C., law firm Fortas helped establish. Addressed to Harry Barnard of Fremont, Ohio, the letter concerns the return of correspondence and documents previously submitted to Fortas.
Fortas writes, in part:
"This is my first opportunity to answer your various letters."
He continues:
"I am returning herewith the note that you enclosed in your letter of May 8. I also return herewith various other communications that you sent to me under date of May 24."
The letter concludes with "My warm regards" and is personally signed by Fortas in blue ink above his typed name.
An interesting example of correspondence from Fortas's distinguished legal career, written thirteen years before his appointment to the United States Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
The letterhead identifies the Washington law firm of Arnold, Fortas & Porter, listing founding partners Thurman Arnold, Abe Fortas, and Paul A. Porter, along with several additional attorneys. The firm would eventually become Arnold & Porter, one of the nation's prominent law firms.
Very good condition with original mailing folds.
