Details:
Official partially printed and manuscript New Hampshire Militia Regimental Order document issued to Captain Aaron F. Stickney, dated August 24, 1847, and signed by John Woodbury as Adjutant. The document directs Captain Stickney of the 5th Company, Infantry, 8th Regiment, Third Brigade, First Division, to report for military instruction and field exercises in Pembroke, New Hampshire.
The order, issued under the authority of Brigadier General William R. Parker, commands Stickney to appear near the residence of Colonel Aaron Whittemore in Pembroke on September 8th at seven o’clock in the morning, fully armed and equipped with side arms, musket, bayonet, and all required infantry accoutrements. The purpose of the gathering was instruction in the “school of the soldier,” company and battalion maneuvers, line exercises, discipline, and improvement in military training. The document further notes that officers would encamp during the course of instruction and were responsible for providing their own rations, tents, and camp equipment.
Good condition overall with light expected toning and age wear.
This attractive pre-Civil War militia document provides insight into the training and organization of New Hampshire’s citizen-soldier system during the Mexican War era. Issued to Captain Aaron F. Stickney and signed by Adjutant John Woodbury, it reflects the continuing emphasis placed on military readiness and formal instruction among state militia units in the decades preceding the American Civil War.
