Details:
Ernest W. Longfellow autographed handwritten letter signed (ASL), penned from Manchester, Massachusetts and dated September 3, 1891. Written to "P.A. Welch Esq.," Longfellow responds to a request for his autograph, writing in full: "I am happy to send you my autograph although I do not come under the head of 'distinguished Americans,'" before signing, "Very truly yours, Ernest W. Longfellow."
The letter provides a charming glimpse into Longfellow's modest personality, as he good-naturedly downplays his own accomplishments despite being an accomplished artist and the eldest son of celebrated American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Very good condition overall with expected age toning, scattered foxing, and handling wear. The letter measures approximately 4 x 4.5 inches, with bold, legible handwriting and signature throughout.
Ernest Wadsworth Longfellow (1845-1921) was an American painter best known for his landscape and marine works. The eldest son of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, he studied art in Europe before establishing a successful career exhibiting throughout the United States. Although he lived somewhat in the shadow of his father's literary fame, Ernest earned recognition in his own right as a respected painter and remains a notable figure in late nineteenth-century American art.
