Details:
Isaac Israel Hayes autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated June 15, 1869, written from 20 East 15th Street in New York City. Addressed to Mrs. Jas. Radcliffe of Boston and signed "I. I. Hayes" at the conclusion.
In the letter, Hayes discusses his upcoming trip to Greenland, reassuring the recipient that his journey will be a brief summer excursion rather than an extended expedition. He explains that he expects to return by early autumn, in ample time to fulfill his scheduled lecture engagements. Hayes also invites the recipient to visit him in New York before his departure, noting that he can generally be found at his office.
An interesting letter from the celebrated Arctic explorer, written as he prepared for another journey to Greenland, a region that had played a central role in his earlier expeditions.
The letter measures approximately 5 x 8 inches. Fine condition with some staining and minor surface loss along the left margin.
Isaac Israel Hayes (1832–1881) was an American physician, Arctic explorer, and author who participated in several important 19th-century expeditions to the polar regions. He served as ship's surgeon during the Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853–1855, led by Elisha Kent Kane, and subsequently commanded his own Arctic expedition in 1860–1861 in an ambitious attempt to reach the North Pole. During the Civil War, Hayes served as a Union Army surgeon and commanded Satterlee General Hospital in Philadelphia, one of the largest military hospitals in the country. He later became a prominent lecturer and author, publishing accounts of his Arctic experiences, including The Open Polar Sea (1867).
