Details:
Michael Hillegas and Robert Sanderson autographed manuscript financial document dating from November 1760, recording a series of payments and receipts involving imported goods and commodities. Hillegas appears in an entry dated November 21, 1760, acknowledging receipt of "two pounds six teen shillings" for sugars, with his autograph appearing at the conclusion. The document contains numerous additional contemporary merchant signatures and entries, including Robert Sanderson, owner with Malachy Salter of the privateer Lawrence and later the first Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly.
The document measures approximately 4 x 6.5". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, original folds, scattered staining and ink marks, minor edge wear, and handling wear.
Michael Hillegas (1729-1804) was a Philadelphia merchant, Revolutionary patriot, and one of the most important financial administrators of the American Revolution. In June 1775, the Continental Congress appointed Hillegas, jointly with George Clymer, Treasurer of the United Colonies. After Clymer's resignation, Hillegas continued as sole Continental Treasurer and managed the finances of the revolutionary government throughout the struggle for independence. Following adoption of the Constitution, he became the first Treasurer of the United States, serving until 1789. His long tenure placed him at the center of American public finance from the opening of the Revolution through the establishment of the new federal government.
Robert Sanderson (1696-after 1761) was a Boston-born merchant, shipowner, and early political figure in Nova Scotia. He was elected to Nova Scotia's first General Assembly and became the first Speaker of its House of Assembly in 1758. During the Seven Years' War, Sanderson and merchant Malachy Salter owned the privateer Lawrence. He later traveled to England and appeared before the Board of Trade and Plantations concerning his allegations of irregularities in the administration of Nova Scotia's colonial government.
