Details:
Arthur J. Goldberg autographed typed letter (TLS), dated September 20, 1963, on official Supreme Court of the United States stationery bearing the heading "Chambers of Justice Arthur J. Goldberg." Addressed to Emanuel Friedman, Corresponding Secretary of the Brandeis Lawyers Society in Philadelphia, and personally signed "Arthur J. Goldberg" in blue ink.
The letter responds to an invitation for Goldberg to address the anniversary dinner meeting of the Brandeis Lawyers Society, an organization named in honor of pioneering Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis.
Goldberg writes, in part:
"I would like very much to participate in your program, but regret that I must decline your invitation, because of the very heavy pressure of Court business for the forthcoming term."
An interesting piece of correspondence written during Goldberg's tenure on the Supreme Court, approximately one year after his appointment by President John F. Kennedy. The letter also reflects the continued influence of Louis Brandeis within the American legal community.
Fine condition with light age toning and minor handling wear.
