Details:
Robert Goodloe Harper autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated April 11, 1807, from Baltimore and addressed to William Hammond. Harper requests "a particular list of all the lots sold by the Baltimore Company, since the year 1793," asking what portions of the tracts had been sold and the quantities contained in each tract or part. He concludes "Yours truly" and signs "Rob: G. Harper." The integral address leaf is directed to William Hammond, Esq., Anne Arundel County, with later docketing identifying Harper.
The letter measures approximately 8 x 10". Fine condition with expected age toning, original mailing folds, scattered light staining, minor edge wear, and handling wear. Remnants of the original wax seal and areas of paper loss associated with opening are present on the integral address leaf.
Robert Goodloe Harper (1765-1825) was an American attorney, statesman, and military officer who represented South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives and later Maryland in the United States Senate. A veteran of the Revolutionary era, Harper subsequently served in the Maryland militia and attained the rank of Major General during the War of 1812. A prominent Federalist, he was also an influential Baltimore attorney and is remembered for the political phrase "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute," associated with the XYZ Affair and American resistance to French demands.
