In the letter, Reed thanks Governor Brown for his correspondence and expresses satisfaction at hearing from him. Reflecting on the recent political climate, Reed writes, "If we can only have equal results thro' the North we will have a country again fit to live in." An interesting example of political correspondence between two prominent Republican figures during a period of significant electoral change in the United States.
The letter measures approximately 5.75 x 9 inches. Fine condition with some age toning and paper loss at the upper left corner.
Thomas Brackett Reed (1839–1902) was an American politician and attorney who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1889 to 1891 and again from 1895 to 1899. A Republican congressman from Maine, Reed was one of the most powerful and influential congressional leaders of the late 19th century. Nicknamed "Czar Reed" for his commanding leadership style, he introduced sweeping procedural reforms known as the Reed Rules, which strengthened the authority of the Speaker and enabled the House to overcome legislative obstruction. His reforms fundamentally transformed congressional procedure and helped establish the modern powers of the Speaker of the House.
