Details:
John Nicholson autographed manuscript document (DS), dated June 2, 1783, from the Comptroller General's Office of Pennsylvania. Nicholson certifies the settlement of the depreciation account of Major William Alexander, noting that Alexander, for his service as a Brigade Major in addition to his regular pay as an officer of the line, was allowed monthly extra pay of twenty-four dollars pursuant to resolutions of Congress dated May 27, 1778 and January 12, 1781. He signs prominently at right, "Jno Nicholson."
The document provides an interesting record of Pennsylvania's efforts to settle military compensation and depreciation claims at the close of the Revolutionary War, issued only weeks before the Treaty of Paris formally ended the conflict.
Very good condition with expected folds, overall toning, scattered staining and ink marks, and minor edge wear and losses.
John Nicholson (1757-1800) was a Welsh-born American financier, public official, and land speculator who served as Comptroller General of Pennsylvania from 1782 to 1794. Before assuming that office, he served as a clerk to the Board of Treasury of the Continental Congress and later as an auditor responsible for settling accounts of the Pennsylvania Line. As Comptroller General, Nicholson exercised broad authority over the Commonwealth's finances during the immediate post-Revolutionary period. He later became one of the era's most ambitious land speculators, entering into extensive ventures with financier Robert Morris and acquiring interests in vast tracts of Pennsylvania and western lands before suffering financial collapse near the end of his life.
