Details:
Henry Dearborn autographed Massachusetts Militia document ordering an enrolled soldier to appear at the usual place of parade, "armed and equipped as the law directs, for military duty." The partially printed form dates from the 1810s and bears Dearborn's bold autograph at the conclusion. A desirable military document from one of the most prominent American officers whose career extended from the opening battles of the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812.
The document measures approximately 6.5 x 3.5". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, scattered foxing, significant chipping and paper loss along the left edge, and minor handling wear. Dearborn's autograph remains bold and unaffected.
Henry Dearborn (1751–1829) was an American military officer and statesman whose service spanned the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 and later participated in Benedict Arnold's arduous expedition to Quebec, where he was captured during the unsuccessful American assault. After his exchange, Dearborn returned to the Continental Army and served at Ticonderoga, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Yorktown, ultimately attaining the rank of colonel. President Thomas Jefferson appointed him United States Secretary of War in 1801, a position he held until 1809. During the War of 1812, Dearborn returned to active military service as a senior Major General in the United States Army and commanded American forces in the northeastern theater.
