Details:
Chester W. Nimitz autographed typed letter (TLS), dated April 11, 1960, on his personal Fleet Admiral letterhead from the Federal Office Building in San Francisco, California. Addressed to Kenneth Browne of Mesa, Arizona, Nimitz thanks him for a letter sent on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday.
Nimitz also responds to Browne's question about Arizona, writing that he had never visited Phoenix but was interested to learn whether Mrs. Browne's ailment had benefited from the climate. He apologizes for the delayed response due to unusually heavy correspondence and closes by extending personal regards from himself and Mrs. Nimitz. Boldly signed "C. W. Nimitz" above his typed name and rank.
Fine condition with expected age toning, a horizontal mailing fold, and scattered light discoloration along the right edge.
Chester W. Nimitz (1885–1966) was a United States Navy Fleet Admiral and one of the principal American military commanders of World War II. As Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, Nimitz directed Allied naval operations across the Pacific, including the pivotal Battle of Midway and the island campaigns that ultimately brought American forces to Japan. He represented the United States at the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, and was one of only four U.S. Navy officers appointed to the five-star rank of Fleet Admiral.
