Details:
Civil War-era Pennsylvania transportation document dated July 1863, recording expenses associated with moving soldiers and recruits between Clarion and Kittanning, Pennsylvania. The account includes transportation for Captain B. J. Reid and three recruits for Colonel Porter, as well as Sergeant J. H. Patrick, Sergeant J. W. McClain, and additional recruits traveling between the two Pennsylvania communities. Individual transportation charges are recorded for several dates in July, totaling $18.75.
The document is particularly evocative of the wartime movement of Pennsylvania troops, having been prepared in July 1863, the same month as the Battle of Gettysburg and during an intense period of military mobilization throughout the state. A notation dated July 20, 1863, records payment in full of Major B. J. Reid and is autographed by J. H. McComb. The document is identified as a "Triplicate."
The document measures approximately 7.75 x 6". Fine condition with expected light age toning, minor edge and handling wear, and a few small spots.
