Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was a career United States Army officer who resigned his commission in 1861 to join the Confederacy following Virginia's secession. He served as commanding general of the Army of Northern Virginia, leading Confederate forces in many of the Civil War's most significant campaigns, including the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, effectively bringing the Civil War to a close. After the war, he served as president of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University, until his death in 1870.
