Cassius Marcellus Clay (1810-1903) was an American politician, diplomat, soldier, and prominent Kentucky abolitionist who became a nationally known opponent of slavery despite coming from a wealthy slaveholding family. A veteran of the Mexican-American War, Clay became active in the antislavery movement and published the abolitionist newspaper True American in Kentucky. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him U.S. Minister to Russia, where he served from 1861 to 1862 and again from 1863 to 1869. Clay worked to maintain Russian support for the Union and later participated in negotiations surrounding the United States' purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
