Eight United States Supreme Court Justices autographed First Day Cover (FDC), commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Evans Hughes, former Chief Justice of the United States. The commemorative cover bears the four-cent Charles Evans Hughes postage stamp, canceled April 11, 1962, in Washington, D.C., on its first day of issue.
The cover features the original autographs of eight United States Supreme Court Justices, signed in blue and black ink:
Thurgood Marshall (1908–1993) – Associate Justice, 1967–1991. The first African American appointed to the United States Supreme Court and a central figure in the American Civil Rights Movement.
Abe Fortas (1910–1982) – Associate Justice, 1965–1969. Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and known for his involvement in important decisions concerning constitutional rights.
Byron R. White (1917–2002) – Associate Justice, 1962–1993. Appointed by President John F. Kennedy and a former professional football player.
Harry A. Blackmun (1908–1999) – Associate Justice, 1970–1994. Best remembered for authoring the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade (1973).
Arthur J. Goldberg (1908–1990) – Associate Justice, 1962–1965. A prominent labor attorney who subsequently served as United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
Potter Stewart (1915–1985) – Associate Justice, 1958–1981. Known for his influential opinions concerning freedom of speech, criminal procedure, and constitutional protections.
William J. Brennan Jr. (1906–1997) – Associate Justice, 1956–1990. One of the most influential Supreme Court justices of the 20th century, particularly in matters involving civil liberties and equal protection.
Tom C. Clark (1899–1977) – Associate Justice, 1949–1967. Previously served as United States Attorney General under President Harry S. Truman.
The attractive cachet features a portrait of Charles Evans Hughes alongside an illustration of the United States Supreme Court chamber, commemorating his distinguished career as Governor of New York, Secretary of State, and Chief Justice of the United States.
An impressive assembly of eight Supreme Court autographs spanning several generations of American judicial history. The signatures were necessarily collected over time, as the eight justices did not all serve together on the Court.
Fine condition.
