Details:
Peter Muhlenberg autographed partially printed bill of lading dated October 28, 1802, concerning a shipment aboard the schooner Nancy & Polly, commanded by J. C. Brewer, sailing from Philadelphia to Guadeloupe. The document records the shipment of "one trunk & one small bale of merchandise" and is prominently autographed "Muhlenberg Coll." by Muhlenberg in his capacity as Collector of the Port of Philadelphia. The document is additionally autographed by the vessel's master, Joseph C. Brewer.
The document measures approximately 7.75 x 6.75". Fine condition with expected age toning, original folds, scattered light staining, and handling wear. Removably attached at the corners to a slightly larger vintage backing sheet.
Peter Muhlenberg (1746-1807) was a Lutheran clergyman, Revolutionary War officer, and prominent early American statesman. After serving as a minister in Virginia, Muhlenberg became an ardent supporter of the Patriot cause and was commissioned colonel of the 8th Virginia Regiment in 1776. According to a celebrated tradition, he concluded a sermon on the Book of Ecclesiastes by declaring that there was "a time to fight," removed his clerical robe to reveal a military uniform, and called upon his congregation to join the revolutionary cause. Muhlenberg served throughout the war, rose to the rank of Major General, and participated in the decisive Yorktown campaign of 1781. Following independence, he represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives and briefly served in the U.S. Senate. President Thomas Jefferson appointed him Supervisor of the Revenue for Pennsylvania in 1801 and Collector of the Port of Philadelphia in 1802, the federal office in which he autographed this document.
