François Joseph Paul de Grasse (1722–1788) was a French admiral whose actions were decisive in securing American victory in the Revolutionary War. In 1781, commanding a powerful French fleet in the Caribbean and western Atlantic, de Grasse sailed to the Chesapeake Bay in support of the combined American and French campaign against British forces at Yorktown. At the Battle of the Chesapeake on September 5, 1781, his fleet prevented the British Royal Navy from relieving or evacuating Lord Cornwallis's army. With the Chesapeake effectively controlled by the French, George Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau were able to complete the siege of Yorktown, culminating in Cornwallis's surrender on October 19, 1781. De Grasse's naval victory is regarded as one of the crucial military events leading to American independence.
