Details:
William Sulzer and Chester C. Platt autographed typed letter (TLS), dated August 15, 1913, on official State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead from Albany. Addressed to S. B. Coston of New York City, the letter is signed "Chester C. Platt" at the conclusion in his capacity as Secretary to the Governor, with a large handwritten endorsement across the body of the letter by Governor William Sulzer, reading "Your friend, Wm. Sulzer."
The letter acknowledges Coston's support for Governor Sulzer during a period of considerable political controversy. Platt writes that the Governor appreciates the encouragement received in his fight for good government and assures the recipient that Sulzer will continue performing his duties regardless of political or personal consequences.
Dated just two days after the New York State Assembly voted to impeach Sulzer on August 13, 1913, the letter represents an especially interesting document from one of the most turbulent episodes in New York political history. Sulzer would ultimately be convicted and removed from office in October 1913, becoming the first governor of New York to be impeached and removed.
The letter measures approximately 8 x 10.5 inches. Fine condition with original mailing folds and light handling wear.
William Sulzer (1863–1941) was an American politician who served as Governor of New York from January to October 1913. Previously a Democratic congressman representing New York from 1895 to 1912, Sulzer gained a reputation as a progressive reformer and advocate for government accountability. His governorship was marked by a bitter political struggle with the powerful Tammany Hall organization and its leader, Charles F. Murphy. Impeached on charges involving irregularities in his campaign financial disclosures, Sulzer was removed from office after less than ten months. He subsequently returned to political life, serving in the New York State Assembly.
Chester C. Platt (1869–1934) was an American businessman, political figure, and secretary to Governor William Sulzer. Before entering state government, Platt operated a drugstore in Ithaca, New York, and is frequently credited with helping originate the ice cream sundae during the 1890s. His association with this popular American dessert remains a notable part of Ithaca's culinary history.
