Joseph Story (1779–1845) was an American jurist, legal scholar, and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1811 until his death in 1845. Appointed by President James Madison at the age of 32, Story remains the youngest person ever appointed to the Supreme Court.
A leading figure in the development of American constitutional law, Story served alongside Chief Justice John Marshall and played an influential role in establishing the authority of the federal judiciary. He participated in numerous landmark decisions, including Martin v. Hunter's Lessee (1816), which affirmed the Supreme Court's appellate authority over state courts in federal matters, and United States v. The Amistad (1841), in which the Court ruled in favor of Africans who had been illegally transported into slavery.
In addition to his judicial service, Story was a professor at Harvard Law School and one of America's foremost legal scholars. His monumental three-volume Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833) became one of the most influential legal treatises of the 19th century and remains an important work in American constitutional scholarship.
