Details:
James B. Pond autographed typed letter (TLS), dated August 9, 1900, on personal letterhead from 330 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City Heights, New Jersey. Four pages on two adjoining sheets, addressed to American dramatic critic and author William Winter of California. Signed "J. B. Pond" in ink at the conclusion, with an additional handwritten sentiment. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
A lengthy and engaging letter in which Pond expresses his deep appreciation for Winter's friendship and correspondence, reflects on his own limited formal education, and offers encouragement regarding criticism Winter had received. Pond references celebrated actors Joseph Jefferson and Sir Henry Irving, expressing his belief that both men would appreciate Winter's intellectual perspective and literary contributions.
Particularly interesting is Pond's discussion of his extensive correspondence with the influential abolitionist and clergyman Henry Ward Beecher. Pond recalls discovering an additional letter among the hundreds he had received from Beecher, bringing his collection to 394 letters. He recounts an exchange concerning an unfavorable editorial in the Boston Journal criticizing Beecher's sermon on evolution. Pond reproduces Beecher's colorful response, dismissing the criticism and emphatically declaring that evolution had come to stay.
The letter concludes with Pond expressing pleasure that the climate of Mentone, California, had benefited Winter's son Louis, adding a personal handwritten sentiment before his signature.
The letter measures approximately 4.5 x 7 inches. Fine condition with light age toning and handling wear. The original mailing envelope exhibits postal markings, address corrections, and expected handling wear.
