Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was a career military officer who rose to command all Union armies during the Civil War. His victories at Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga established him as one of the Union's foremost commanders before President Abraham Lincoln appointed him General-in-Chief in 1864. Grant accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, effectively bringing the Civil War to a close. He later served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877.
