Details:
James Clark autographed partial section of a handwritten document, bearing his signature "Jas. Clark" beneath several lines of manuscript text. The surviving portion appears to have been removed from a larger document, with portions of the original text extending beyond the trimmed right and left edges.
The document measures approximately 5.75 x 6.75". Fine condition with expected age toning, a vertical fold, irregular edges from removal from the original document, scattered light staining, and handling wear.
James Clark (1730–1826) was a Connecticut military officer and Revolutionary War veteran who commanded the 6th Company of the 3rd Connecticut Regiment in 1775. A resident of Lebanon, Connecticut, Clark was commissioned Captain on May 1, 1775, as colonial forces mobilized following Lexington and Concord. His company marched to the American lines surrounding Boston and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. Clark was among the Connecticut captains whose companies crossed the dangerous Charlestown Neck under British fire and reinforced the American position during the battle. As American ammunition was exhausted and the troops withdrew, the Connecticut forces helped cover the retreat from the peninsula. Clark's company suffered casualties during the fighting, including Daniel Memory, who was killed, and Gershom Clark, who was wounded. Clark remained in service through December 1775 and returned to military service in 1776, continuing his participation in the struggle for American independence.
