David Davis (1815–1886) was an American jurist, statesman, and close political associate of President Abraham Lincoln. A prominent Illinois attorney and judge, Davis became one of Lincoln's most trusted political advisers and played an important role in securing his presidential nomination in 1860.
Appointed to the United States Supreme Court by Lincoln in 1862, Davis served until 1877. He authored the majority opinion in Ex parte Milligan (1866), a landmark decision limiting the use of military tribunals to try civilians when civilian courts remained operational.
Following his Supreme Court service, Davis represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1877 to 1883 and served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1881 to 1883. His close association with Lincoln and influential judicial career established him as an important figure in Civil War and Reconstruction-era American history.
