Herbert Clark Hoover (1874–1964) was the 31st President of the United States, serving from 1929 to 1933. A successful mining engineer and humanitarian, Hoover gained international recognition for organizing food relief efforts during and after World War I before serving as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.
Hoover's presidency was dominated by the onset of the Great Depression following the stock market crash of 1929. Defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, he remained an influential Republican statesman for more than three decades, later heading commissions on government reorganization under Presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower.William Howard Taft (1857–1930) was the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1921–1930). He remains the only person in American history to have held both offices.
Before becoming president, Taft served as Governor-General of the Philippines and Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt. Following his presidency, he was appointed Chief Justice by President Warren G. Harding in 1921, fulfilling his longtime ambition to serve on the nation's highest court. His remarkable career spanning both the executive and judicial branches makes him one of the most distinctive figures in American political history.
