Details:
Reverend David Jones autographed Commonwealth of Pennsylvania legal summons dated December 23, 1809, in Chester County. The partially printed document summons an individual to appear before Jones, serving in his capacity as a Justice of the Peace, to answer a plea of debt not exceeding one hundred dollars. Jones has autographed the document prominently at the conclusion.
The document measures approximately 7.5 x 3.25". Fine condition with expected age toning, light staining and soiling, minor edge wear, and handling wear.
Reverend David Jones (1736–1820) was a Baptist minister, ardent American patriot, and military chaplain whose service spanned several of the young nation's early conflicts. A powerful advocate for independence, Jones preached to Pennsylvania troops in 1775 and, with the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, entered the Continental Army as a chaplain. He served with General Anthony Wayne and narrowly escaped the Paoli Massacre in 1777. His outspoken support for the Revolution reportedly made him a target of the British, and tradition records that Jones once personally captured a British officer and delivered him to George Washington at Valley Forge. He later again served as a military chaplain during General Wayne's campaigns in the Northwest Indian War from 1794 to 1796 and, remarkably, returned to military service during the War of 1812 while in his seventies. Jones remained closely associated with Wayne and delivered the funeral oration when the general's remains were reinterred in 1809.
