John Hope Franklin autographed a handwritten letter inside a floral greeting card, dated January 4, 2005, and addressed to "Sarah." Franklin offers warm New Year wishes and thoughtful advice to the young recipient, writing in part that he hopes she will "grow up to see many New Years" and that with each passing year she will improve her life "by studying hard and doing something to help others."
Franklin also reflects on his own life, noting that he had celebrated his 90th birthday the previous week and was "still working every day." He explains that although he no longer taught, he continued to write papers and books and occasionally give lectures. The letter closes with further encouragement and is signed, "Sincerely, John Hope Franklin."
Accompanied by a 7 x 5" glossy black-and-white photograph depicting Franklin holding an orchid in his greenhouse. The upper margin is captioned in ink, "John Hope Franklin in his greenhouse." The verso bears a "Photo © Dan Crawford / All Rights Reserved" credit label with reference number 458-5A.
