Details:
Rare original 1963 "Hands Off Cuba!" handbill designed and distributed by Lee Harvey Oswald in New Orleans during the months preceding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Printed on goldenrod-colored paper, the approximately 6 x 9-inch handbill reads: "HANDS OFF CUBA! Join the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, New Orleans Charter Member Branch, Free Literature, Lectures, EVERYONE WELCOME!" The location section bears a stamped identification reading "L. H. OSWALD, 4907 MAGAZINE ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA."
Accompanied by an original Fair Play for Cuba Committee flyer titled "The Truth About Cuba IS IN CUBA!" The document protests American travel restrictions to Cuba and encourages citizens to challenge the federal government's policies toward the island nation.
In May 1963, Oswald contacted the Fair Play for Cuba Committee seeking to establish a New Orleans chapter. He subsequently ordered membership materials and approximately 1,000 "Hands Off Cuba!" handbills from a local printer. Oswald distributed these handbills on the streets of New Orleans during the summer of 1963, activities later documented in the Warren Commission's investigation into Kennedy's assassination.
Notably, another original "Hands Off Cuba!" handbill sold at RR Auction in October 2013 for $8,575. That example did not feature the hand-stamped Oswald name and New Orleans address present on the example offered here.
The two original pieces are professionally presented together in a black frame with contrasting black matting. Finished frame measures approximately 19 x 14.5 inches. Fine overall presentation with light age-related toning. Not inspected outside of the frame.
Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) was a former U.S. Marine who defected to the Soviet Union before returning to the United States in 1962. His pro-Castro political activities in New Orleans became an important part of the historical record surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The Warren Commission identified Oswald as Kennedy's assassin.
